Event Details

The Authority 2.0 Conference is a half day event for police officers, local neighbourhood community managers, councillors, voluntary sector group leaders, members of the public, academics and press - anyone wanting to share and expand their knowledge on social media communications, and how organisations in authority communicate using these platforms. This event is also targeted towards local businesses, social enterprises and individuals who are curious about the digital phenomenon and wanting to learn a little more about how Web 2.0 works. For those investigating how to engage further with those in authority, this is an ideal way to do so.

Based around academic research carried out by MA Social Media students at Birmingham City University and their presentations, the aim of the event is to share, explore, challenge and build understanding in digital media, investigate if social media is an appropriate communication method for authorities such as the police, and look to future sustainability and understanding of how the Internet can be a valuable asset to community engagement.

Academic presentations will be given by Stephen Croome, Jennifer Yang and Paul Hadley, with presentations also coming video from Leland Strott (Baltimore) and Simona Serban (Strasbourg).

We will be welcoming a presentation from Jon Hale of http://govdelivery.co.uk, demonstrating some of the programmes they run with the US Government, and representing local online communities, Nick Booth of http://podnosh.com and William Perrin of http://www.kingscrossenvironment.com & http://talkaboutlocal.org.uk will be joining us.

Veterans and newcomers alike will be able to learn about how audio and video podcasting, blogging and social media platforms are being used as good practice by similar organisations and areas, and will be able to explore if these are proving to be successful in reaching their goals.

After the mid-morning coffee break (sponsored by GovDelivery), we will be hosting an open debate and panel session, discussing the current issue that is grabbing a great deal of mainstream press coverage at this time.

The "Terrorist or Photographer?" debate brings together an expert panel of 4 representatives, all nationally recognised leaders in their specialsed fields:

Chief Inspector Mark Payne - Head of Press & PR, West Midlands Police http://cimarkpayne.wordpress.com/

Karen Strunks- Freelance published photographer http://www.karenstrunks.com/ and Director of the 4AM Project http://4amproject.org/

Christian Payne - Social technologist and mobile media maker http://ourmaninside.com

Emma Mulqueeny - Home Office Consultant & Co-owner of http://rewiredstate.org

DCI Ian Grundy - Counter Terrorism Unit, West Midlands Police http://west-midlands.police.uk

Chairperson - Jigar Patel (MA Social Media, BCU).

Lunch will be available from 1pm, at which point your networking opportunities, discussions with panel guests, delegates, lecturers, students and presenters is positively encouraged.

Following this event, at 1.30, we will be linking in with the BA students, and their TweetUp event. Please do not hesitate to join us for informal meetings and discussions into the afternoon.

Overview

Social media in the context of internet technologies is a relatively new term that broadly correlates to the concept of web 2.0. Social media consultancy as a profession is being shaped by the early proponents of the field.

There is a dichotomy within this nascent industry. On the one hand, established businesses are seeking to co-opt the tools of social media and use them for commercial gain; on the other, third sector organisations are making use of these tools to build complex and conversational communication strategies for minimal cost.

This MA programme explores the techniques of social media, considers the development and direction of social media as a creative industry and contributes new research and knowledge to the field.

Key Facts

The MA Social Media is part of a wider suite of postgraduate programmes within the Birmingham School of Media.

All the courses seek to develop reflective professionals in the media, creative and cultural industries, who can operate at the forefront of the academic discipline and of professional practice.

The content and approach of the curriculum focuses strongly on enterprise skills, engagement with new communication technologies and promoting innovation.

Birmingham has a thriving social media scene and it is fast becoming an industry. It is therefore wholly appropriate that this programme should be based within Birmingham School of Media, where students have access to a peer group and active community of social media practitioners.
